An essential component in any business, effective marketing is more of an art than a science.  The term “marketing” is frequently misused in place of terms like advertising, promotions, sales, design and the like.  Although those things often make up part of the marketing mix, marketing is a much broader concept that starts with being able to match your product or service with a customer by thoroughly understanding their wants and needs, fulfilling those wants and needs in a smarter way than your competitors, and being able to communicate your offerings effectively to your market.

Marketing isn’t just about your web site, logo, fancy brochures, advertising, social media, SEO and Google Adwords.  Yes, they can form part of it, but it’s about so much more – keeping a constant eye on your competitors, trends in the market, emerging threats, and most of all, understanding your customer.

Effective marketing involves looking at your business from the top down and researching what’s going on in and around it in order to create a sustainable and robust marketing strategy.

So how do you create a robust marketing strategy? First, you need to look at the kind of marketing you’ve done in the past and the results it has generated.  From there you can evaluate what you’re doing now and the outcomes it is generating.  If you don’t already have an intimate understanding of your customer you may need to do further research.  This point cannot be stressed enough – you must thoroughly understand your customer, their wants and needs, and what drives their purchase decision.  Without this critical information, any marketing strategy is based on guesswork.

Once you fully understand your customer and have a marketing strategy in place this will determine other elements of your marketing mix such as:

  • Branding
  • Website (and SEO)
  • Social media
  • Advertising
  • Other marketing collateral (eg brochures, flyers)
  • Digital content creation
  • Existing customer engagement

At Thomsen Consulting we can assist you in truly understanding your customer and in developing and executing all aspects of a marketing strategy to move your business forward.
